Youth Fly Fishing Clinic
This introductory class is great for youth age 7-17. The youth will learn all the ways we have fun on the water!
Activities vary for children aged 7-10, 11-14, 15-17: Classes can be tailored upon confirmation.
Introduction to Fly Fishing: Children will learn the basic principles of fly fishing, including how it differs from traditional fishing and why it's an enjoyable outdoor activity.
Equipment Overview: Kids will be introduced to the necessary equipment for fly fishing, including the rod, reel, fly line, and flies. They'll learn about the different types of rods and reels and how to use them.
Casting Practice: One of the most important skills in fly fishing is casting. Children will learn the basics of casting, including how to hold the rod, make a backcast, and forward cast. They'll have plenty of time to practice their casting technique in a safe and controlled environment.
Knot Tying: Kids will learn how to tie basic fishing knots, such as the improved clinch knot and the surgeon's knot. These knots are essential for attaching the fly to the leader and connecting different parts of the fishing setup.
Fish Identification and Ecology: Understanding the types of fish they'll encounter and their habitats is crucial for successful fishing. Children will learn about common fish species found in local waters, their behavior, and the importance of conservation.
Safety Instructions: Safety is paramount in any outdoor activity. Kids will be taught essential safety rules and practices, including how to handle fishing equipment responsibly, how to stay safe around water, and how to recognize potential hazards.
On-Water Practice: Depending on the location and facilities available, children may have the opportunity to practice their newly acquired skills in a real fishing environment, such as a pond, lake, or stream. Under the guidance of instructors, they'll have the chance to catch and release fish while putting their skills to the test.
Environmental Awareness: Kids will learn about the importance of preserving natural habitats and protecting the environment. They'll be encouraged to practice responsible fishing practices, such as catch-and-release and proper disposal of fishing waste.
Q&A Session: Throughout the clinic, children will have the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification on any aspect of fly fishing they find confusing or challenging.
